The Yuba Watershed Institute Presents ” An Evening of Art and Biology”, a fundraising event for YWI.
Tom Van Wagner, local amphibian biologist, will be giving a talk titled ” Battle of the Ranids: Bullfrogs vrs Foothill Yellow-legged Frogs on Shady Creek.
Shady Creek, which parallels Tyler Foote Road on the San Juan Ridge, originates just west of the historic Columbia gold diggins’. Eventually joining the South Yuba River below the Highway 49 bridge, and reflecting the profound effects of
historic hydraulic mining activities, it’s geomorphology is a patchwork of braided
channels, water impoundments and relatively unmodified stream reaches.
Despite its highly altered condition Shady Creek hosts a surprising and
interesting amphibian fauna.
A dynamic relationship exists between two frog species there, the endemic foothill yellow-legged frog and the North American bullfrog, an invasive introduced species. Their predator-prey relationship and competition for resources is a deadly serious battle for survival.
